Patch panel
Patch panels are a collection network ports contained together, usually
within a rack that connects incoming and outgoing lines of a LAN or other
communication, electronic or electrical system. In a LAN, the patch panel
connects the network's computers to each other and to the outside lines that
enable the LAN to connect to the Internet or another WAN. Connections are made
with patch cords. The patch panel allows circuits to be arranged and rearranged
by plugging and unplugging the patch cords.
Switches
Network switches look identical to network hubs, but a switch generally
contains more "intelligence" (and a slightly higher price tag) than a hub.
Unlike hubs, network switches are capable of inspecting data packets as they are
received, determining the source and destination device of that packet, and
forwarding it appropriately. By delivering each message only to the connected
device it was intended for, a network switch conserves network bandwidth and
offers generally better performance than a hub.
Racks
Racks are an enclosed metal framework which serves the purpose of housing
electronic equipment. Usually a rack contains multiple bays, each is designed to
hold a unit of equipment such as a computer server. Typically, the equipment
unit is mounted onto the inbuilt rails and secured in place with screws.
